"Part of Porteous’s strength as an artist is that she is able to bring an internal landscape of human experience and memory to the surface in her drawings, sculpture, installation and video work. She causes us to question that which we assume we see and the act of seeing itself."

Georgina Colburn, A-N, November 2008

From Glasgow and based in the Highlands of Scotland and Berlin.

Growing out of an expression of my own internal landscape, now my work also captures echoes from external landscapes.

Installations use film, automatic drawing, found texts, objects, people, conversation, sound sculpture and performance, prompting a counterintuitive response.

Recent collaborations have strengthened the running social commentary of my own process - whether these dialogues are a celebration of the mundane or wonder at the extraordinary.

Motivated by collectives in Berlin I have instigated Insertion Collective which is attracting international interest from a variety of disciplines. This is gathering momentum following on from the launch in February 2012.

Influences include: Susan Philipsz, Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, Susan Collis, Yayoi Kusama, Andrei Tarkovski, Olafur Eliasson, John Cage, Marina Abramovic and Sophie Calle.

Inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places and yet all is very much linked and connected. Not only are my site-specific works an intervention of a physical space but an insertion into the minds of all who partake.

All my work is connected then disconnected with each individual's interpretation and experience; thus encapsulating the essence of memory and making memory in the process.

memories become the memory
the viewer becomes the viewed
the mind becomes the space
